A Boy's Observation of the Fairer Sex

See's Candies 1 lb. Chocolate & VarietyFew things will give you mental pause faster than your 8 1/2 year-old son suddenly quipping, "You know what I've noticed about women?"  Any number of sentences could follow, and at least 70% of them are things that have the potential for him to be sent home from school or possibly arrested. I took a deep breath and braced myself.  "What?"

"Well, I've noticed that a lot of times, women will make a list of things that they need, and then they go to the store and get all sorts of things that they don't need, but that they just want, or maybe stuff that was on sale."  I looked down at my hands, which were turning purple from the circulation that was being cut off by the eight Target bags that I was carrying. As I put the bags down, NEVERMIND WHAT WAS OR WASN'T ON MY LIST WHEN I WENT TO TARGET, and rubbed some feeling back into my hands, I said, maybe a little too defensively, "What's your point?"

He must have sensed danger, because he casually replied, "Oh, no point really.  It's just an observation that I've made."

It's just an observation that he's made. I couldn't come up with anything better than, "Ok."  Because what, really, was there to say. That he was an 8 year old boy that had no business making "observations about women," because there's no telling where that will lead? That I knew many grown men who not only can't articulate their observations, but also can't use them to their advantage? That some observations were better kept to himself? (The classic divorce-trap question comes to mind, "Honey, do these jeans make me look fat?")

Eh, he's apparently wily enough that he ought to be able to figure out all these things by himself.  I'll check back in in another year, and see if he's made any more observations about the world. In the meantime, I observed that his room was a bit on the messy side, and perhaps he ought to go clean it while I emptied out my Target bags full of super cute and useful sale items that I probably don't need.
